Frequently asked questions

What is an a-kasse?

An a-kasse is a Danish unemployment insurance fund. You pay a monthly fee, and if you lose your job you receive unemployment benefits (dagpenge) of up to DKK 22,041 per month before tax in 2026.

Do foreigners need an a-kasse in Denmark?

It is voluntary, but without an a-kasse you get no unemployment benefits. Anyone working in Denmark can join, regardless of nationality.

How much does an a-kasse cost?

From DKK 513 to DKK 579 per month in 2026. The fee is fully tax-deductible. The cheapest fund open to everyone is A&Til at DKK 521.

When am I eligible for benefits?

After 12 months of membership and an income of at least DKK 286,632 within the last 3 years. You must also be registered with the job centre and available for work.

Is an a-kasse the same as a union?

No. The a-kasse pays unemployment benefits. A union (fagforening) helps you while you are employed: contracts, salary and disputes. You can join one without the other.
